I thought I’d talk about how Shame came to be, but then I felt that maybe I should ask the three main characters instead, because after all… it’s their story.
If I can keep them in one room long enough, that is. I have invited them to sit down with me for an interview. Let's see how it goes.
Carmen Moreno comes in first, looks at the three empty chairs, then at me before she sits down in the middle, gracefully folding her legs to one side, knees together, and corrects her skirt. She greets me with a warm smile. Her lips are painted blood red. It’s eerily fitting. Her story is… graphic.
I’m amazed at how she can look so composed despite what she’s been through.
Next comes Luciano Salvatore. It’s as if a dark shadow follows him, a threat in the air. His eyes flash, and they don’t seem to miss anything as he studies me. Next, his gaze falls on Carmen. He nods curtly, then sits down to her right, farthest away from me, and angles the chair so he can keep an eye on both me and the door.
Carmen doesn’t shrink back. Given their history together, I can’t believe how she’s so brave.
Lastly comes Lucas Payne. Tall, blond, and broad shouldered. ‘My viking’, is what Carmen calls him. I can see why. He looks a little flustered, takes one look at the people before him, grabs Carmen’s chair–with her still seated in it, lifts it as if it weighs nothing, sets it down further away from Luciano, then pulls the empty chair in between them.
He finally sits too, his features tense.
“Overprotective pup,” mutters Salvatore.
“Be nice, boys,” says Carmen.
I pray to god Lucas won’t let Luciano get to him. Last time that happened nothing good came out of it. Nothing good at all.
I push back my chair a little and pick up my pen and notebook. “Shall we begin?”
“It reeks in here,” says Lucas. “Rotten. It comes from that corner. Can we throw out the trash?”
Luciano shoots to his feet, so does Lucas, and the two men stand chest to chest. We’re one slight shove away from disaster.
I shrink back, but Carmen darts to her feet and steps in between them. “Mio Dio!” She glances at me. “Sorry.” Then she pushes at both giants, shoves them toward the door. “Get out. I’ll talk to the nice lady myself.”
I created a monster. You’ll soon see what I’m talking about.

Until Salvatore realizes he can use Lucas to destroy the last bit of my resistance.
But I have something Salvatore may want even more than my destruction. The life that grows inside of me in exchange for my freedom. For a fresh start with the man I love by my side.
It’s my only hope… and my greatest shame.
